| The Compassionate Presence Retreat offers a dynamic dialogue between Buddhist psychology, mindfulness practice, and western psychotherapy. Through this relational practice, we will explore classical teachings on mindfulness, suffering and healing and relate these to western psychological understandings of suffering and the healing relationship. By extending the fruits of our meditations directly into exploration of the healing relationship, therapists will have the opportunity to deepen clinical presence and refine their relational skills. Silent meditation, mindful movement and time in nature will help to cultivate the grounding and unconditional presence that allow for the emergence of our deepest wisdom and compassion in our clinical relationships. |
Retreat Goal:
The skills and insights cultivated in this retreat are intended to enhance the effectiveness of clinical practice and the quality of the therapeutic relationship.
The retreat will weave together periods of personal and relational meditation with inquiry into clinical practice applications.
We will learn “Insight Dialogue”, an interpersonal meditation practice where two or more meditators, established together in mindfulness and concentration, open in contemplation together and to discovery of the causes and the release of interpersonal suffering.
We will use the guidelines of Insight Dialogue to identify and cultivate wholesome mind states, speech and actions and to practice these in dialogue with others.
This will lead to deeper relational awareness and acceptance, to increased self - and other - regulation of emotional states, and to more accurate empathy.
Our inquiries will support a psychotherapy that is wise, balanced, wakeful and compassionate.
Mindful movement and time in nature will help cultivate the grounding and unconditional presence that allows for the emergence of our deepest wisdom.
Therapists will learn to:
1. Describe guidelines of interpersonal meditation
2. Apply these guidelines to remain present and self‑aware while navigating pleasant and unpleasant moments in both intrapersonal experience and interpersonal dialogue
3. Use these guidelines to identify and cultivate wholesome mind states, speech and action, and to practice these in dialogue with others
4. Use these guidelines to identify and practice in dialogue with others the release of unwholesome mind states, speech and action
5. Describe both western and Buddhist psychological understanding of the causes and healing of human suffering.
Please Note:
Insight Dialogue is a meditation practice that builds on our established personal meditation and retreat experience.
Since meditation is a foundation for this training, previous retreat experience and commitment to a regular personal meditation practice is requested.
Also, the retreat will be held in “noble silence” as a way of deepening the understandings and tranquility of our inquiries together, as we step back from the everyday busyness of our conceptual minds into a more quiet way of being with ourselves and with others. In this spirit, we ask that you leave your computers behind and will ask that you turn off your cell phones for the duration of the retreat.
If you are new to meditation and/or do not have silent retreat experience and would like to attend, please contact Sharon Beckman-Brindley at sharonbb@ntelos.net or Phyllis Hicks at phyllishicks@mindspring.com to explore the suitability of this retreat for you.
Relational Insight Meditation (RIM) programoffers mental health professionals to explore how a relational understanding of core Buddhist teachings can support a life and a professional practice of greater freedom and ease for ourselves and clients.
The RIM program is part of Metta Programs, a not-for-profit organization, supporting a wise and compassionate life.
Its central offering is a relational understanding of early Buddhist teachings and the innovative, structured meditation practice of Insight Dialogue.
